The Foundation was established by the late John van Geest CBE and his wife, the late Lucille van Geest MBE, in 1990 as successor to the John van Geest Charitable Fund (originally established in 1977).  Grants since 1977 have amounted to in excess of £18M.

The Trustees work within the criteria of their grant making policy involving  approximately 75% of the Foundation's annual grant expenditure being applied for medical research and the remaining 25% for welfare purposes.

Applications are not tabled for Trustees' consideration if they fall outside the Foundation's grant making criteria.
